June 22 – July 28, 2006
Opening: Thursday, June 22, 6-8 pm
Harris Lieberman is pleased to announce the opening of Scar Lines, the first New York solo exhibition of Belgian painter Stef Driesen.
Driesen’s paintings synthesize body and landscape, merging human figures with elements of nature. His works reexamine Old Master painting, particularly Northern European and Flemish artists such as Rubens and Van Eyck. Driesen combines these art historical references with a personal narrative, investigating his own sexual identity, along with a more general undercurrent of hidden desire.
Driesen’s compositions expand space, opening up a different dimension into a world full of the theatrical and fantastic. His works elicit a sense of mythic romanticism from environments that are at once beautiful and strange. The sensual brushstrokes and fleshy palette obscure the distinction between figure and environment, projecting human characteristics upon natural scenery.
Stef Driesen studied at the Academie Voor Schone Kunsten in Hasselt, Belgium. Last year he had a solo exhibition at Marc Foxx Gallery in Los Angeles. Driesen’s work will be featured in an upcoming exhibition at the MADRe Museum in Naples. In addition, he will have a solo exhibition at Alison Jacques Gallery, London in early 2007. Driesen lives and works in Antwerp.
